Plastic Injection Molding
Plastic injection molding is used for a number of applications, from the automotive industry to consumer electronic devices and medical components. The techniques can be used with a range of materials. Designers and manufacturers may choose to use flexible materials like urethane, which is more resistant to wearing down than other rubber materials but carries a higher cost, or ABS, which can be colored and is available at lower costs.
Deciding to Purchase Plastic Injection Molding Equipment
When companies are just getting started, they face decisions about either purchasing the equipment and machinery needed for plastic injection molding or working with another company to produce their products. Due to the high cost of the equipment, they may initially turn to third parties to produce prototypes and purchase the machinery for plastic injection molding only when their volume of business increases sufficiently to offset the initial cost. Third-party manufacturers, however, are often expensive as well. For each item that you want produced, it must craft a mold into which the plastic will be injected. Due to this investment, the manufacturer may require high-volume orders for each part. If the volume required is beyond what your company needs to test your product, it may be a wiser investment to purchase a low-cost machine so that you can perform manufacturing in-house.
